How to set up TalkCopyPaste in under 2 minutes
Add your Grok API key once, then start talking and pasting anywhere.
What you'll need

Step-by-step setup
Eight simple steps to your first dictation
Open TalkCopyPaste & click Get Free Key
- Launch TalkCopyPaste from your applications
- You'll see the Quick Setup screen
- Click the orange "Get Free Key →" button
- This will open the Groq API Keys page in your browser
Log in to the Groq portal
- You'll be taken to console.groq.com/keys
- Sign in with Google, GitHub, SSO, or email
- If you don't have an account, create one — it's free, no credit card needed
Click Create API Key
- Once logged in, you'll see the API Keys dashboard
- Click the "+ Create API Key" button in the top-right corner
Name your key & click Submit
- In the popup, enter a Display Name — e.g. "TalkCopyPaste"
- Keep the expiration set to "No expiration" (default)
- Click "Submit" to generate your key
Copy the API key
- Your new API key is now displayed
- Click the "Copy" button to copy it to your clipboard
- Important: You won't be able to see this key again, so make sure it's copied!
Paste the key & click Save Key
- Go back to the TalkCopyPaste settings window
- Paste your API key into the input field under "Paste it below"
- Click the "Save Key" button
Connected! You're ready
- You'll see a green ✓ CONNECTED badge — your key is verified!
- "API key saved successfully!" notification confirms everything worked
- Your key stays on your Mac only — completely private
Start recording!
- Click the TalkCopyPaste icon in your menu bar
- Click "Start Recording" or use the shortcut ⌘⇧+Space
- Speak naturally — your words will be transcribed
- Paste anywhere: Gmail, Slack, VS Code, Notion, and more!
Your key is stored locally on your device
TalkCopyPaste never sends your API key to our servers. It stays on your computer, protected by your operating system\'s keychain (macOS Keychain or Windows Credential Manager). You can remove it anytime from Settings.
Common questions during setup
Is my API key safe?
Yes. Your key is stored locally on your device using your operating system's secure storage (macOS Keychain or Windows Credential Manager). TalkCopyPaste never sees or stores your key on our servers.
Can I change providers later?
Absolutely. You can switch to OpenAI, a local Whisper model, or any OpenAI-compatible API anytime from Settings. Your workflow stays the same—just a different provider.
What if my key stops working?
Check that your API key is valid and has sufficient quota. Groq's free tier has generous limits for personal use. If issues persist, visit the Groq dashboard to troubleshoot.
Does this cost money?
TalkCopyPaste is free. You pay for API usage directly to your provider. Groq offers a generous free tier (enough for 2+ hours of dictation daily). Paid usage is typically $0.04/hour—much cheaper than subscription alternatives.
Can I remove the key?
Yes. Open Settings, find the Transcription Provider section, and click "Remove Key." Your key is immediately deleted from TalkCopyPaste.
